FAFSA: The FSA ID

Creating an FSA ID is the first step to completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

An FSA ID must be created before a student can start the FAFSA

The FSA ID is a username and password that students use to log in to the Federal Student Aid’s online platforms and, in turn, to access the FAFSA. The FSA ID is one of the critical pieces of information that links the FAFSA form to the student.

More about the FSA ID:

  • At least one parent is required to make an FSA ID (in addition to the student) if the student is a dependent. This is because a parent will also be required to sign the FAFSA before it is submitted.
  • An email address is required when creating an FSA ID; a student cannot use the same email as a parent.
  • The FSA ID needs to be created using unique personal information.
  • The FSA ID serves as a legally binding signature, and it is used at the end of the online FAFSA in exactly that capacity.
  • Only a student can create their own FSA ID.
  • It takes around 5-minutes to create an FSA ID and account. However, it can take up to three days for the FSA ID to become functional within the FAFSA system.
